Hearty Welcome to Coastal Aquaculture Authority's Website!

Globally, the contributions of aquaculture to the total fish production have been on the rise and forecasts on future augmentations from aquaculture are even more promising. In recent years, improved farming technologies and good management practices have contributed to reduced social and environmental impacts. Today, there is growing reliance on aquaculture as an ideal source of fin and shellfish production to meet the ever-increasing demand of the growing population.

The Coastal Aquaculture Authority Act, 2005 (No 24 of 2005) has been enacted by the Central Government to regulate coastal aquaculture and ensure that it does not cause any detriment to either the coastal environment or the livelihoods of coastal populations. For this purpose the Central Government has also established the Coastal Aquaculture Authority. The Act encompasses farming of shrimp, prawn, fish or any other aquatic life under controlled conditions in ponds, pens, enclosures or otherwise in brackish water, but excludes fresh water aquaculture. The Act is expected to give impetus to sustainable development of aquaculture in the country and also create conducive environment for diversification of species.

While preparing this website on the Coastal Aquaculture Authority, it has been our endeavor to present the key facts and functions of the Authority. We have made all efforts to present this website in the most comprehensive manner, which not only serves the needs of those engaged in coastal aquaculture but also the planners and policymakers, scientists, environmentalists, NGOs, practitioners of aquaculture, students and the civil society engaged in different activities concerning this important coastal area activity.

In today's world, websites are a vital source of knowledge and provide real-time information to the users. Therefore, it would be our endeavor to keep you updated of our activities at regular intervals. Since we have just embarked on building our website, please bear with us for sometime till all the pages are fully constructed and become as user-friendly as possible. We would welcome your suggestions for further improvement of the website and please feel free to communicate with us.
